RIGHT POSITION | RIGHT SKILLS | RIGHT RESULTS
It’s the new year and you might be reflecting on how this year is going to go for you. What’s working well, and what’s not working so well when it comes to your employment? If you’re absolutely thrilled with your career and how it’s progressing, that’s great. My advice would be to reflect on your successes and why you were successful. Is it your delivery, people skills, strategic focus, business results, technology expertise, or any number of skills you may have mastered that produced superior results? Whatever it is, don’t rest on our laurels. Think about what’s changing in your position, your company, and yourself, and what it will take this year to repeat or exceed last year’s results.
Have a conversation with your boss about the upcoming year and what the expectations will be. Ask the question, “What will it take this year to be a star player in the business”? When you’ve gathered the information you need, develop a plan for yourself.
What’s on your development list, who can you partner with, what resources will you need and what’s your timeline for achieving your development goals? Then schedule the time and resources so that your development doesn’t take a back seat. The world is changing, priorities are changing, and you may be changing in terms of your needs. Give yourself the gift of having a plan to continue your successful career.
On the other hand, you may be saying it’s the new year and I’m not feeling particularly good about my job and what’s ahead. Perhaps there’s been a leadership change, or the business has been faltering. Or, you may be dissatisfied with the work itself and say this is the year I’m going to figure out what’s next for me.
Begin your evaluation by identifying what you specifically don’t like now and what you’d like to replace it with. Make a list of the skills you’d like to use more than you do now. Review the job sites for positions that appeal to you, and retool your resume to focus on those skills that match the job descriptions.
It’s also critical to create your personal brand and use it effectively in the marketplace or when networking. Making a change is possible. It requires time, work, a commitment to networking, and engaging in activities that bring you in contact with the right people.
