ARE YOU SUCCESSFUL?
I know it is a weird question. The answer may not be as straightforward as one would think. The media would have us believe that success is the achievement of fame and fortune. Reading daily headlines dispels that myth very quickly.
Many would define success as something different. For some, it is obtaining that college degree. For others, it might be buying their first car or house. It may be getting that promotion or starting a business. It could be visiting as many countries as possible. Or, finding the person you love. It may be earning enough money, so you don’t have to worry or retiring in comfort. It might be overcoming an addiction or recovering from a severe accident or disease. It could include growing in your relationship with God.
You get the picture. Defining success has many dimensions. Yet for many, success is one-dimensional and tied to work. It becomes status and prestige. It’s based on title, annual income, public recognition, published book, advanced degrees, appointments to boards and committees, or achieving business goals.
About 30 years ago, a colleague gave me a plaque after I accepted a higher-profile position in a larger company. Over the years, I have been fortunate to receive many awards for my professional and volunteer efforts. However, this plaque is my favorite and has been placed in a prominent spot in each office I have occupied since receiving it.
Success is defined very differently on this plaque. It doesn’t confine success to career accomplishments but rather takes a very broad approach in applying it to life. There have been numerous times over the past 30 years, in which I have sat back and read this plaque. It reminded me that career accomplishments are great but are just one way to measure success. Let your life define your success.
