Our six-year-old grandson is in his second year of Mites hockey. The season is ending soon and his skills have improved so much since his first year. He is very self-confident in his abilities and has a wonderful disposition and personality. He is a big fan of our local NHL team and we talk often about how they are doing.
He comes to our house daily after school and usually, he wants to play some version of hockey- knee hockey in the basement, boot hockey outdoors, or in the garage. He pretends to be the Minnesota Wild and I am another rival team. He usually wins.
Recently, we decided to practice in the garage. He selected wrist shots and got them airborne as the focus. He showed me some techniques and we both started hitting the puck. He was good at it. Grandpa-not so much. After several dismal attempts, I informed him that I wasn’t very good at it.
His response to me was: ‘Believe in yourself.” Unexpected advice from a grandson to a grandpa.
Great advice for all. My immediate thought was that he may become a motivational speaker if this hockey gig doesn’t work out.
